In the Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht I have found a book that introduced me to the work of Patrick van Caeckenbergh, a Belgian artist who creates his own mysterious world.

An old favourite: the campaign to save the Amsterdam Forest Theatre by Lemon Scented Tea. The Amsterdam Forest Theatre is an open air theatre that stages plays during the summer months. Due to three poor summers in a row, performances were cancelled, resulting in a huge budget deficit.

The group hardest his by a possible closure of the Amsterdam Forest Theatre is the forest gnomes living in the Amsterdam Forest. To them, the open air plays are the only form of entertainment. Documentary style commercials reported on their attempts to disrupt normal life in order to pressure the Amsterdam people to donate to the theatre (Booskabouters = angry gnomes).

The campaign started many discussions on the web and on the radio. The result: the theatre was saved.

I think there is a trend in portrait photography to light its subjects like the paintings of old Dutch masters like Vermeer. This photo by Hendrik Kerstens of his daughter Paula is my favourite. I like the calmness of it. And the humour: the typical Dutch headdress turns out to be a simple plastic bag.

South-African photographer Pieter Hugo travelled twice to Nigeria (in 2005 and 2007) to follow a legendary group of itinerant street artists known as the Hyena Men. These men earn their money by performing on the streets with hyenas, pythons and baboons, and by selling traditional medicines.
